Bare Bones Software Releases BBEdit 13.1
Revamped Markdown Preview, New ‘Run Unix Command’ Command, and ‘HTML Tidy’ Returns
NORTH CHELMSFORD, Mass. – June 2, 2020 – Bare Bones Software today announced the release and immediate availability of BBEdit® 13.1, the first feature update to the latest major version of its professional strength text and code editor.
BBEdit 13.1 brings back ‘HTML Tidy’ and introduces a completely overhauled Preview feature, a new ‘Run Unix Command’ command, and expands the array of supported Markdown variants.
Customers writing Markdown can now select a specific renderer for use in live previews and HTML exports. BBEdit 13.1 includes built-in renderers for CommonMark and “classic” Markdown; and can use Pandoc, MultiMarkdown, and GitHub-flavored CommonMark, if the customer has those installed. In order to serve any alternative needs, BBEdit 13.1 also provides an option to use a custom Unix command for Markdown-to-HTML conversion.
In addition, extensive internal updates to the “Preview in BBEdit” feature bring significant quality-of-life improvements for customers who use BBEdit to create content in HTML and Markdown.
A new ‘Run Unix Command’ command provides a quick means to directly run one-off Unix commands for processing text within BBEdit.
The BBEdit 13.1 update also brings significant improvements to the built-in syntax coloring, function navigation, and code folding support for Unix shell scripts, CSS/SCSS, and Python. In addition, “callout” comment support has been added to the built-in Markdown, CSS/SCSS, and Unix shell script language support.
BBEdit 13.1 also features a suite of markup utilities based on the “Tidy” suite of commands for HTML and XML, including reformatting, correcting simple errors, and checking Web accessibility.
“BBEdit 13.1 builds on a foundation of more than a hundred additions, changes, and improvements in 13.0,” said Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software, Inc. “Everything we’ve done for this update is in service of helping our customers be more productive: from adding Markdown renderer selection and reworking ‘Preview in BBEdit’, to adding HTML Tidy support, and beyond. Despite the small version number change, there is something here for everyone.”
“If you write in BBEdit, now would be a great time to try out its Preview command,” explained Jason Snell, podcaster and publisher of SixColors.com.
BBEdit 13.1 also includes enhancements and refinements to existing features, and fixes for specific reported issues, and is a recommended and free update to all registered customers with BBEdit 13.
BBEdit offers a generous evaluation model in which its full feature set is available for the first 30 days of use. At the end of the 30-day evaluation period, BBEdit will continue to run in Free Mode with a permanent feature set which includes its powerful editing capabilities, but not its web authoring tools or other exclusive features. BBEdit’s exclusive features may be re-enabled at any time with a purchased license.
BBEdit 13.1 requires macOS 10.14.2 or later (macOS 10.14.6 or later recommended) and is fully compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina. Detailed information on all of the changes in BBEdit 13.1 can be found at:
