Bare Bones Software Releases BBEdit 15.5
Introduces New Workspaces System, New Support for macOS Writing Tools, FTPS, and Tons of Under-the-hood Performance Improvements
NORTH CHELMSFORD, Mass. – May 28, 2025 – Bare Bones Software today announced the release and immediate availability of BBEdit® 15.5, a significant feature update to the most recent version of its professional strength HTML and text editor.
BBEdit 15.5 introduces a useful new “Workspaces” system, new support for the macOS “Writing Tools” feature, FTPS, a new text transformation, enhanced Git user experience, and a massive pile of performance improvements and optimizations throughout.
BBEdit’s new support for the Writing Tools feature of the Apple Intelligence suite enables in-line summarization, proofreading and composition assistance when working with words. For working remotely, BBEdit 15.5 adds new support for FTPS (FTP protocol run over TLS), which enables the use of BBEdit’s convenient remote file editing and site deployment for customers whose remote FTP file services require transport security.

A wide array of reworked internals, fine tuning and optimizations result in palpable performance improvements across multiple systems, particularly benefiting customers who use BBEdit to its strengths when editing large files and performing large-scale operations. A few examples include execution speed in multi-file search and replace, complicated Grep pattern searches, large-scale operations involving line analysis and computation, and a more efficient Markdown parser for very large files, among others.
A new “Strip Diacriticals” text transformation facilitates conversion of accented text into ASCII from the Text menu, Text Factories or scripted automation. In Markdown documents, headings are now indented according to their level and folded according to their structure. Several new Git navigation and function controls further enhance the user experience for customers who routinely employ BBEdit’s built-in Git support.
“For BBEdit 15.5 we’ve continued to build on the foundation that we introduced in BBEdit 15.0,” said Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software. “Overall we’ve added more value in this feature update than some tools put in major version releases. Not only have we included significant productivity enhancements like Workspaces, but we’ve also done a vast amount of work behind the scenes to improve BBEdit’s already legendary performance, incorporate support for new macOS features such as Writing Tools, and provide options for improved FTP connection security, among many other enhancements.”
BBEdit 15.5 also includes enhancements and refinements to existing features, and fixes for specific reported issues, and is a recommended and free update to all registered customers with BBEdit 15.
BBEdit 15.5 requires macOS Monterey (12.0) or later. Detailed information on all of the new features and changes in BBEdit 15 can be found at:
