Bare Bones Software Releases BBEdit 16.0
Introduces More Shortcuts Actions, Search for Text in Images,
Support for the W3C HTML Checker and Much More.
NORTH CHELMSFORD, Mass. – May 21, 2026 – Bare Bones Software today
announced the release and immediate availability of BBEdit® 16.0, a
major new version of its professional-strength text and code editor.
BBEdit 16 significantly expands Shortcuts support, introduces text
search in images, support for the W3C HTML checker, keyboard emulation
for vi and improvements to AI Chat worksheets, along with a dizzying
array of new customization settings and enhancements, plus improved
performance tuning throughout.
With an entire collection of brand new actions, powered by App
Intents, expanded Shortcuts support now makes BBEdit’s powerful text
transformations even more available to workflows outside of the
application. In addition, BBEdit 16 introduces the ability to use its
powerful built-in text searching, including regular expressions, to
search for text within images.
The new W3C HTML checker support ensures conformance with the most
up-to-date HTML5 standards and guidelines established by the W3C
themselves. AI worksheet users will now enjoy reduced response times,
and can now watch the results stream in. Newly available keyboard
emulation for vi enables a basic set of vi navigation and editing
commands and modes.
BBEdit 16 introduces significantly more customization and granular
control, including color scheme selection for individual projects,
finer control when working with files in Git repositories, and support
for additional web site deployment settings. The infrastructure for
BBEdit’s programming-language extensibility is significantly reworked,
bringing improved performance, simpler authoring and simplified
installation of language modules. A wide array of reworked internals,
fine tuning and optimizations result in palpable performance
improvements across multiple features and capabilities.
“BBEdit 16 is the feature release I’ve wanted to make for a long
time,” said Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software. “A
great many of the new capabilities depended on infrastructure work
that’s been underway for years behind the scenes. Searching for text
inside images, for example, addresses a real need that I encounter
routinely. Along with the visible additions, we’ve also continued
extensive work on performance, refinement and reliability throughout
the application.”
In total, BBEdit 16.0 includes more than 100 new feature additions,
changes and refinements to this award-winning, professional-strength
text and code editor. BBEdit 16.0 requires macOS Sonoma (14.0) or
later. Detailed information on all of the new features and changes in
BBEdit 16.0 can be found at:
https://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/notes-16.0.html
BBEdit offers a generous evaluation model in which its full feature
set is available for the first 30 days of use. At the end of the
30-day evaluation period, BBEdit will continue to run with a permanent
feature set which includes its powerful editing capabilities, but not
its web authoring tools or other exclusive features. BBEdit’s
exclusive features may be re-enabled at any time with a purchased
license. BBEdit 16 offers a fresh 30-day evaluation to everyone.
